Outline of Research


As ceramic materials are excellent in high temperature strength, chemical durability and wear resistance, they are expected to be widely utilized in structural applications. In the field of functional ceramics, more prominent materials are strongly demanded from industries with the trend for higher efficiency, lighter weight and higher integration.

The characteristics of ceramics are controlled not only by their bulk properties but also by the properties at their grain boundaries or interfaces. We, at ceramic materials section of ONRI, pay attention to the grain boundaries and interfaces of ceramics and are promoting researches on; (1) Analysis and evaluation technologies for material interfaces; (2) Simulation and design technologies of interfaces; (3) Creation and manufacturing technologies for ceramic and ceramic composite materials with high performance and low cost.

Our current research works are as follows; Theoretical calculation of ceramic/ceramic or metal/ceramic interfaces on first principle; Observation and analysis of various interfaces with high resolution transmission electron microscopy; Development of fiber reinforced composite materials by precursor method; Sintering technologies with spark plasma sintering; Development and evaluation of ceramic bearings with nano-structured materials.
