Scope

In Photonic Chemistry Section, a basic study on interactions between light and matter is being carried on to create unconventional devices. We set nonlinear optical materials and organic optical materials as our main targets. We investigate the mechanisms of third-order nonlinear optical phenomena and the optical effect originated form anisotropy of the material, based on theoretical calculations and on experiments. The research work there includes also the development of novel spectroscopic techniques necessary for clarifying these mechanisms.

On-Going Research Projects

  1. Research on Fast Photo/Optical Response Processes of Advanced Composite Materials (FY 1999-2002)
    • Structure-property correlation study of molecular NLO materials by means of molecular orbital calculation and ultrafast NLO spectroscopy.
    • Spectroscopic investigation on polarized light-indued anisotropy of polymers with photochromic dyes.
    • Two-photon-absorption(TPA)-induced fabrication of polymeric waveguide structure and microstructures and elucidation of its elementary processes.
  2. Research on Molecular Design and Dynamics of Sensitive Optical Materials (FY 1997-2000)
    • Molecular dynamics simulation of nonlinear refractive index change due to molecular motion.
    • Excited state dynamics of photoresponsive molecules by transient absorption spectroscopy.
